Caleta Olivia lies on the San Jorge Gulf and is the gateway to Santa Cruz for anyone coming down the coast. The province places it as the first stop on the Ruta Azul (RN 3) Tourist Corridor.
Things to do
- A 4.5 km coastal promenade, ideal for walking by the sea.
- The cove (caleta) that gives the town its name, a municipal nature reserve since 1992, with cliffs and sand and pebble beaches.
- The Gorosito: a bronze statue almost 13 m tall, from 1969, honoring the oil worker.
- Whale and dolphin watching: thanks to how many there are and how easy they are to see, it's nicknamed the “City of Whales”. Seasons: check before you travel at Turismo Santa Cruz – Caleta Olivia.
- Beaches, museums and water sports.
Getting there
Via RN 3. The nearest airport is Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut), 78 km away according to the province. From here, head south to Fitz Roy, Puerto Deseado and the Petrified Forests (see The coast along Route 3). Tourist office: Av. San Martín and Güemes.
